Update to proposed off-leash dog park in Ward 11

A few weeks ago, Councillor Frances Nunziata held a community meeting with members of her staff as well as the Parks & Rec department to gather feedback on a proposed off-leash dog park in our area.
Area proposed for off-leash dog park.

Area proposed for off-leash dog park.

The Councillor explained how the proposed area (highlighted in red) was technically not suitable for several reasons (no parking, close proximity to residences, etc) but she was planning to ask the City for an exception since it’s the only real suitable area in this part of the ward. She said she didn’t anticipate having any problems getting the exception passed.
There were about 30 people who attended the meeting. No one was opposed to the park, and no residents from Corbett Ave., which the park would back onto, were in attendance – so that was taken as a sign that they would not object either.
As no one was opposed, residents discussed features we’d like to see if approval goes through (fence options, hours of operation, etc).
The Councillor was supposed to have presented the motion at the next council meeting, but I haven’t heard anything since. At the meeting I asked when we could reasonably expect the park to be operational, assuming all ducks were in a row and everything went without opposition or bureaucratic snags. She said if all things went as they should, we should expect to see the park built and operational around the spring of 2015.

    Hi Caitlin,
We couldn’t put the motion on the agenda for the last Council meeting because the deadline had passed so it has been submitted for consideration at the next meeting taking place August 25-26, 2014.
Please note that if approved, the new off-leash area could be in place by spring 2015 (not 2014).

Thanks for the update Jennifer! Slip of the brain on my part there with the 2014/2015 date. Clearly not happening in the past 🙂
