The City of Toronto’s Infrastructure and Service Improvement Plan for the Emergency Shelter System calls for the opening of up to 15 new shelters over the next few years to address both occupancy and relocation pressures on existing shelters. City staff have responded with a search for appropriate new locations, an undertaking that is especially challenging in Toronto’s current real estate market, as well as especially urgent given the current high rates of occupancy in the City’s emergency shelter system.
Staff recommend a new shelter location at 731 Runnymede Rd in Ward 11. This will be considered at the June 23, 2016 Community Development and Recreation Committee, and City Council is expected to consider the recommendation at its meeting scheduled for July 12,13,14, 2016.
Operated by City staff, there will be 24/7 services for up to 100 men from this now vacant site which will be fully accessible and compliant with the revised Toronto Shelter Standards once it is renovated. Work is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2017.
A public information meeting is scheduled for May 31, 2016, 7 pm until 8:30 pm, at David Appleton Community Centre, 33 Pritchard Ave., in the gym.
